CAP-IT Overview

In this study we are aiming to find the best way to give antibiotics to young children with pneumonia. Children are usually treated at home for up to 7 days with a type of antibiotic called amoxicillin.

The CAP-IT study is not looking at a new treatment for childhood pneumonia. Instead, we will study the most commonly used treatment (amoxicillin). It is known to be a very safe drug but surprisingly little is known about how best to use it. We would like to confirm which dose of amoxicillin treatment is best for young children and how long it should be used for.

The trial is being funded by the National Institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment Programme (project number 13/88/11, www.nihr.ac.uk) and the MRC Clinical Trials Unit at UCL.
